Dolby Digital Surround EX
technology was developed by Dolby Laboratories and
LucasFilm in 1998 and first featured on the soundtrack for
Star Wars: Episode I on May 19, 1999. The format features
an additional monaural back-surround channel recorded
within a multi-channel (that is, any soundtrack
with two discrete rear channels) soundtrack's conventional
left and right rear channels. This additional audio is
recorded in both surround channels at -3dB and out
of phase (+/-90°) with one another and any non-EX audio present.
When decoded, this phase
shifted audio (ie. any audio present in both channels at
the same level +/-90° out of phase in
the right and left channels: essentially alternate phase
mono) is extracted, combined and directed to the
back-surround output. This channel aggregation increases
the resultant channel's audio level by 3dB (hence the
initial 3dB reduction). The remaining conventional
in-phase content in the left and right surround channels
is directed to the left and right surround channel outputs
intact. This process produces three 'matrixed' rear audio
channels. Dolby Digital Surround EX is not a 6.1-channel
format, as this nomenclature references the number of
fully discrete channels, but rather '5.1 EX'.
DTS-ES Matrix 6.1
decoders use a matrix extraction technique functionally
identical to that used by Dolby Digital Surround EX decoders (but
using DTS's Neo:6 processing system, avoiding their early
need to licence technology from THX and Dolby
Laboratories). DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 expands upon
the back-surround concept by including a fully discrete
monaural back-surround channel. Despite its name, it is in
actuality a combination of discrete and matrix
technologies.
All DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 soundtracks also
contain matrixed audio content to ensure compatibility
with legacy DTS-ES Matrix 6.1/pseudo-EX decoders. This
audio is unnecessary and must be removed if a DTS-ES
Discrete 6.1 decoder is used. In order to remove this
redundant content, the decoder feeds the discrete channel
audio into the left and right channels 180°
out of phase with the matrixed audio content. This
technique essentially cancels out any matrixed audio in
these channels.
The discrete audio
channel present is simultaneously fed
to the back-centre output in-phase. This process increases channel separation. As the audio content
contained in the discrete left, right and centre surround
channels is not identical (due to the nature of the 'lossy'
compression system used), this channel separation
technique does not allow for fully discrete channel
separation, however (that is, total channel separation).
Channel separation is, despite this limitation,
considerably greater than that of either Dolby Digital
Surround EX or DTS-ES Matrix 6.1.
